Brave and the Bold #23 - Joe Kubert art & cover

Joe Kubert
Brave and the Bold v1 #23, 1959 - The Viking Prince's youth and rise to manhood is chronicled in the first story, while the princess Asa is magically imprisoned in a wooden figurehead in the second. In both tales, the artwork has a scale and splendor that's been consistent throughout the series. Joe Kubert clearly revels in the Viking age, paying special attention to attire, armor and weaponry. His opening splashes, not surprisingly, are boldly heroic scenes that set the tone for the remaining pages. With all the swashbuckling action, I think the most memorable scene occurs at the end of the first story, where the Viking Prince and his princess are peacefully set against the backdrop of a magnificent ship (page 13). "The Figurehead of the Burning Sea" was later reprinted in Brave and the Bold #113. Other artists in this golden age comic include Russ Heath. This is 23 of 32 Brave and the Bold issues by Kubert.
