Weird War Tales #55 - non-attributed Alex Nino art, Joe Kubert cover

Joe Kubert
Weird War Tales v1 #55, 1977Seeking to crush a peasant uprising, a Mexican general disguises one of his soldiers to impersonate their long-dead resistance hero. Harsh and heavily textured, Alex Nino's artwork matches the tale's brutality. Several panels are overworked and lack clarity. His layouts, however, rebel against the norm. Nino combines open and closed panels in varying sizes, resulting in a strong, memorable work. Joe Kubert's yeti-themed cover effectively merges both horror and war genres. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Romeo Tanghal and Bill Draut. This is 10 of 13 Weird War Tales issues by Nino and 17 of 51 Weird War Tales issues by Kubert. /// Nino gallery
